Vera was born on May 17, 1963, in Brno (Czech
Republic) and won the beam title at the 1979 World Championships. She
became injured prior to the 1980 Olympics and was unable to compete in Moscow.
According to Radio Prague,
Cerna was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2003 and underwent surgery that left
her partially paralyzed. Her condition has improved with rehabilitation
although she still has difficulty walking and cannot see out of one eye.
She has three children and lives in Brno.
