Although she never won an Olympic or world all-around title, Romania's Lavinia Milosovici was one of the sport's most accomplished gymnasts during the 1990s. She was the only female gymnast to have competed - and medaled - in every world championships and both Olympics from '91-96. Furthermore, Milosovici is the first female gymnast since Czechoslovakia's Vera Caslavska ('64-68) to win a world or Olympic title on every event. Born October 21, 1977 in Timisoara to father Tanase (a former Olympic wrestler) and mother Ildiko (a former volleyball player), Milosovici emerged on the international scene in '91. That year, at the Junior European championships, she won gold medals on vault and floor exercise, a silver on balance beam, and a sixth-place finish all-around. |
At her first world championships in the fall of '91, she was first on vault, third on balance beam and with her team, fourth on floor exercise, and seventh all-around. At the '92 world championships, Milosovici won gold on uneven bars and took fourth place on vault. Milosovici earned four medals at the '92 Olympics: gold on vault and floor exercise, silver with her team, and bronze in the all-around. At the '93 world championships, Milosovici won on balance beam, placed second on vault, and was eighth all-around. Her beam gold medal meant that Milosovici had accomplished the rare feat of winning a world or Olympic title on every apparatus. In '94, Milosovici picked up four more medals in world championships competition: a gold with her team, silver in the all-around and on floor exercise, and bronze on vault. At the European championships, she was first on vault, second on floor exercise, third on balance beam and sixth all-around. At the '95 Worlds, she helped Romania win its second consecutive team title and placed third all-around. |
