Romania's Monica Rosu vaulted to two gold
medals at the 2004 Olympic Games, held in Athens in August, but she is also
one of her country's most reliable all-around gymnasts.
"Monica is very dynamic," Romanian national team coach Octavian Belu
told IG in Athens. "She has very good orientation, especially for twisting."
In the Aug. 22 vault final, Rosu averaged 9.656 for her two powerful vaults
- a double-twisting Tsukahara and a 2-1/2-twisting Yurchenko. Her two individual
scores were the two highest vault scores of the final. Rosu outscored silver
medalist Annia Hatch (USA) and bronze medalist Anna Pavlova (Russia).
During the Aug. 17 team finals in Athens, Rosu helped Romania repeat its 2000
victory. She competed on two of the four events, scoring 9.625 on vault (the
highest vault score of the night) and 9.387 on uneven bars.
Although Rosu is the current Olympic and European champion on vault, she has
scored well in international all-around competitions. Rosu won three medals
- including bronze medals on vault and floor exercise - at the 2002 European
Junior Championships.
