Ludmila Ivanovna TURISCHEVA |
Soviet Union (URS) |
"The main thing for a gymnast
is total concentration while competing. At such moments one has to put
everything else behind. I know that other gymnasts can do so with a smile
but I can't. And I don't even try to."

Her trainer Vladislav Rastorotsky discovered her in 1963 and coacher her throughout her career. Although her teammate Olga Korbut was more popular with the public, Turischeva was the top gymnast in the early 1970s. For her many sports successes, she was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the Order of Lenin. After retiring after the 1976 Olympics, she married champion Olympic sprinter Valery Borzov. Their daughter Tatiana was born in 1978. Today, Turischeva is head of the Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation and is a brevet judge.
